Berean HSE K-6 Courses 2026-27

Science K-6 Jaguars

Taught by Gray Anderson

Throughout their years studying science, students will learn elements of physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy & physiology, earth science, geology, and astronomy, all from a Christian perspective. They will study the scientific method and the history of science, do experiments, and learn how to think critically and scientifically. All scientific study conducted is built on the desire to better know God the Creator and enjoy the creation that He has made (The school holds to a 6-Day Creation perspective). The joy of science is what this class is about, learning to worship and enjoy God through the scientific study of the marvels of His creation. “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being” Revelation 4:11.

Missions K-6 Jaguars

Throughout their years studying missions, students will learn how to love people from other places and cultures. They pray for the unique physical and spiritual needs of the people groups they hear about and they learn inspiring stories of missionaries through the ages. This class is hands-on and made thoroughly enjoyable through projects, and celebrations. This class helps students to know more about the world they live in and how to fulfill the Great Commission to reach out to people all over the world who do not know Jesus. “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name; make known among the nations what He has done” Psalm 105:1.

Music K-6 Jaguars

Taught by Carma Calhoun

Throughout their years studying music, students will learn music styles and composers, instrument groups, and basic elements of music theory. Students learn vocal performance and choral skills. They sing hymns and other worship pieces and learn to sing as a group. In the second semester, students will learn basic skills for playing the recorder through a motivating program called Recorder Karate where they progress through the belts by mastering songs. Music is an act of worship and a powerful medium for sharing the gospel. Loving God and others through the communication of music is what this class is about. “I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me” Psalm 13:5-6.

Art K-6 Jaguars

Throughout their years studying art, students will create projects of different types and learn to draw, paint, and work with clay and other media. They will learn to appreciate art, develop artistically, and most importantly, worship God through art. They have access to diverse materials and tools. Students also learn some art history, the unique styles of different artists, and that art can be functional as well as beautiful. The heart of this class is to help students enjoy their creator God through learning to see details, growing in discernment, and using their artistic skills in creating works of art. “He has filled him (Bezalel) with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills – to make artistic designs… and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts” Exodus 35:31-33.

PE K-6 Jaguars

Throughout their years of PE class, students will get needed exercise through organized games, sports and activities. They will learn how to improve their personal level of physical activity both at home and at school, working towards developing lifelong habits. They will learn team sports such as basketball, soccer, and dodgeball. They do gymnastics, play team games, and run obstacle courses, all while having fun and improving their personal fitness level. They will learn godly character traits such as diligence, loyalty, honesty, endurance, self-government, determination and teamwork. In PE class, students learn how to worship God through physical activity and be good stewards of their bodies. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

Great Books 2-6

Taught by Kimberly Probst

This class will be run like a literature book club for more advanced readers who can read a chapter book or classic. In class discussion, students will explore concepts and evaluate book themes in the light of God’s Word. Great Books is about encouraging students to develop a life-long love for learning, a love for God, and a love for reading books. “The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just. The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip” Psalm 37:30-31.

Architecture 3-12

Taught by Gray Anderson

Architecture is an elective class for students who are excited about architecture and designing and building things. They are helped through the process of imagining, designing, drafting and building. Using a variety of materials, students will create architectural structures that withstand stress, remain strong under pressure, and that are also elegant and beautiful. This course literally teaches students the importance of a good foundation (Matthew 8:24-27). Students learn to worship God through what they build and learn how to use their engineering and designing gifts to bring Him glory. “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain” Psalm 127:1.

Fiber Arts 3-12 (sewing and beyond)

Taught by Dr. Amy Rogge

Fiber Arts is an elective class for students who are interested in learning how to sew and create fiber art. It provides students with entry level knowledge in sewing machine use and care, fabric types and care, and sewing accessories and how to use them. Students will also be introduced to embroidery finishing, up-cycling, felting, spinning, and more. Depending on their skill level, each student will be given opportunities to flourish through hands-on sewing and fiber arts. Students new to sewing are introduced to the basics. Continuing students will be challenged to try new projects that will also build on basic skills. The goal for the advanced student is to continue growing from the basics to mastering skills through more advanced projects. Fiber Arts class allows students to progress at their own speed, bringing glory to God in what they make. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God our Father through Him” Colossians 3:17.

Berean HSE 7-9A Courses 2026-27

English Composition 7-9

In English Composition, students will learn how to write clear and effective sentences, paragraphs and essays. Students will learn the building blocks of essays by spending time focusing on sentences, paragraph structure, introductions, conclusions, and providing compelling reasons for their arguments. Classes will also focus on teaching students how to organize their thoughts and create a structured argument, so that their ideas can truly shine. This course will include some oral presentations, projects and essays. Enjoying the process of writing is what this course is about, learning about how to create strong arguments and compelling narratives. “But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name” John 20:31.

New Testament 7-9

Students will study the New Testament story, beginning with a brief review of the intertestamental period before moving into the birth of Jesus, His earthly ministry, His death, resurrection, and ascension, and the spread of the gospel from Jerusalem to the Gentile world. Students will learn to read and apply the Scriptures as followers of Jesus and discover the New Testament message as a consummation of the Old Testament revelation. In addition to the student workbook, this course will include some oral presentations, projects, and essays. The whole Bible is a single story; this course is about how it all comes together in Jesus: “He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the Head of the Body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Colossians 1:17-18

Speech & Debate 7-9

In Speech and Debate, students will learn elementary skills in public speaking and debate, including delivery, audience considerations, and the synthesis of logos, ethos, and pathos. They will study the way that Jesus communicated and the concept of the “Word” in scripture, consider the words Jesus chose, and the times when He used no words. Students will develop the skills to speak openly about what they believe, compose and deliver speeches, and experience appropriate, positive, and constructive criticism by teacher and peers in a safe and friendly environment. Confidence, thinking skills, logical arguments, the ability to recognize faulty logic and reasoning, apologetics, and the basics of debate are all aspects of this class. “And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people. But some men from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and some from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen. But they were unable to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking” Acts 6:8-10.

Science Fiction Literature 7-12

In Science Fiction Literature, students will participate in a discussion-based inquiry into science fiction short stories and novels. They will look at a variety of science fiction writings and learn to find Christ in them, weighing them against Scripture. This course will include some oral presentations, projects and essays. In the writing component of this course, students will learn to express their thoughts and ideas in writing, Reading and writing are connected; writing is about sharing with others in a way that moves and inspires them, helps us get to know about ourselves, and deepens our connection with God; and reading is generously receiving that communication. “My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer” Psalm 45:1.

Art 7-12

In 7-9 Art, students will create quality art projects of different types and learn to draw, paint, and work with clay and other media. During their years in the HSE program, students will learn to appreciate art, develop artistically, and most importantly, worship God through art. They will have access to diverse materials and will learn about the unique styles of different artists. Chemistry 7-12

In Chemistry, students will study energy, temperature, atoms and molecules, classifying matter, chemical equations, stoichiometry, atomic structure, molecular structure, polyatomic ions, molecular chemistry, acids and bases, solutions, gases, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical equilibrium, oxidation, and more. Students will learn how to think scientifically and explore chemical processes through experiments, assignments, and in-class discussions. All scientific study conducted in the HSE program is built on the desire to better know God the Creator and enjoy the creation that He has made (The school holds to a 6-Day Creation perspective). “I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly. Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them” Psalm 111:1-2.

French 7-12

French 7-12 is an ongoing class where students work towards learning how to speak and read French. They will practice real-life conversations, prepare mini conversational speeches, and read French books. The class structure accommodates different levels of French knowledge and ability. In addition to learning how to have conversations with people in French, students will learn how to pray and worship God in French, experiencing the blessing of singing and worshiping in a language they had not previously known. The goal of this course is to introduce students to another language and help them to love and appreciate people, connect with them, and have the possibility of sharing the gospel with them. Learning a language like French is about loving God, loving people and creating opportunities to share the gospel with others. “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some” 1 Corinthians 9:22.

Missions 7-12

In 7-12 Missions, students will explore the Biblical foundation for missions, examine New Testament examples of mission work, and be inspired by histories of missionaries. They will look at modern missionary work, discuss things which make success on the field more likely, and realize the importance of reaching unreached people groups. Students will be introduced to four areas of mission call: mobilizing, going, giving and praying. This class is about giving students the opportunity to get excited about God’s heart for missions and for each student to ask, “Lord, what will you let me do for You and Your kingdom?” “And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’” Romans 10:15.

Sign ASL 7-12

Sign ASL 7-12 is an ongoing class where students learn American Sign Language through receptive and expressive communication. Learners will practice real-life conversations, prepare short signed presentations, and engage with ASL videos. This interactive class welcomes all skill levels and introduces students to the richness of Deaf Culture, Deaf history, and the Deaf community. Students will also learn how to express their faith in ASL, experiencing the beauty of worshiping God visually and kinesthetically through a new language. The heart of this class is to foster a deep love and respect for the Deaf community. As they develop ASL fluency, students gain the tools to build meaningful relationships, appreciate linguistic diversity, and open new doors for sharing the gospel. Learning ASL is ultimately about loving God, loving people, and creating intentional pathways to connect with others. “I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings” 1 Corinthians 9:23

SAT/ACT Prep 7-12

In this class, students will learn SAT/ACT skills, such as critical reading, vocabulary, grammar, math skills, data analysis, word problems, basic Algebra, and answering exam essay questions. These skills are critical and best learned early and continued throughout high school (this is why the class is offered to interested 7-8 students who are ready to dive in). In addition to college entrance exam preparation, this course will also prepare students for some of the challenges they will encounter in college, and help them to maintain a close and personal relationship with God throughout college and beyond. “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” Jeremiah 29:11.

Berean HSE 9B-12 Courses 2026-27

Domestic Survival 9-12

God calls us to be people who live fruitfully and generously in the world – and that takes skill. Throughout their years of Domestic Survival, students will build the practical skills to care for themselves and tangibly love their neighbors (and friends, roommates, etc.) using the tools and disciplines of daily life. Students will learn to feed themselves and their friends (presenting a meal and meal planning), maintain their clothing (basics of washing, ironing, and mending), navigate their environment (basic auto maintenance, public transportation, savvy and personal security), prepare for independent living (basic budgeting and stewardship, starting a business, basic household repairs, cyber-security, writing resumes and interview skills, study habits, communication, and being a good roommate/housemate), maintain a close and personal relationship with God (personal prayer, devotion, and Bible study), and pursue craftsmanship in everything they do. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ” Colossians 3:23-24.

American History 9-12

In American History, students will explore an overview of our nation’s history starting with Columbus and the Spanish and continuing through the English settlement of America, the War of Independence, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Spanish-American War, WWI, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, WWII, the Space Race, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and America today. Throughout the year, students will also look at worldviews in conflict and Biblical responses to issues. This course will include some oral presentations, projects and essays. The objective of this course is not only to have students learn key events in American history, but also to help them see these events from God’s perspective. “From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth – He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do” Psalm 33:13-15.

Bible, Knowing God 9-12

In the Bible, Knowing God class, students will learn what makes up a worldview and answer the basic questions underlying any worldview. They will begin the year with a thorough presentation of a Bible-based worldview, including apologetics, worship, prayer, ethics, vocation, family, and impacting the world for Christ through evangelism. Then they will look at how to interact with others in the world who hold different views. Students will be prepared to defend their faith with conviction and knowledge, respond with power and love to people in the world, make space for charitable listening, and be agents of change in their culture. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” 1 Peter 3:15.
